Zoysia Grass Profile
Zoysia (Zoysia japonica and related species) is a warm-season grass native to Asia that has become one of the most popular turf choices in the transition zone and Southeast. Its defining characteristic is density — a well-maintained Zoysia lawn forms such a thick mat that most weeds cannot establish, and foot traffic leaves almost no lasting impression.
The trade-off for that density is slower establishment and a longer dormancy period than Bermuda. Zoysia greens up later in spring and browns earlier in fall than Bermuda in the same region. In the upper transition zone, Zoysia may be brown for 5–6 months of the year, which some homeowners find unacceptable compared to overseeded alternatives.
- Active growth: Late spring through early fall
- Shade tolerance: Good — better than Bermuda, inferior to St. Augustine
- Drought tolerance: Excellent — goes dormant rather than dying
- Traffic tolerance: Very good — slow to show damage and slow to recover
- Weed resistance: Outstanding at proper density and mow height
Mowing: Height and Frequency
Zoysia should be mowed at 1–2 inches for most residential applications. Like Bermuda, a reel mower produces a noticeably superior cut at these heights — the scissor cut of a reel blade reduces the browning and tearing visible after rotary mowing at low heights.
At 1–1.5 inches, the Fiskars StaySharp Max Reel Mower is the right tool for most serious Zoysia homeowners. The StaySharp system maintains blade sharpness without annual service and cuts cleanly through Zoysia's dense, stiff blades that challenge cheaper reel mowers.
Mowing frequency during peak growing season is every 7–10 days. Zoysia grows more slowly than Bermuda, which means less frequent mowing but also slower recovery from scalping or damage. Never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single cutting.
Fertilizing Schedule
Zoysia has moderate fertility requirements compared to Bermuda — it responds well to nitrogen but does not need the heavy feeding schedule that Bermuda requires to maintain density.
- First application: When soil temps consistently exceed 65°F. Apply The Andersons PGF Complete 16-4-8 for a 6–8 week feeding that covers the early growing season.
- Midsummer: One additional application of Milorganite is safer than synthetic nitrogen in heat and builds soil biology over time.
- Last application: 6–8 weeks before expected first frost. Do not push late-season nitrogen into dormancy — it encourages growth that is then killed by frost.
- Iron supplementation: Zoysia responds well to iron applications for enhanced color without additional top growth. Liquid iron can be applied as a foliar spray every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
Weed Control Calendar
Zoysia's density is its best weed defense. A properly maintained Zoysia lawn at the right mow height is nearly self-weed-suppressing once fully established. Pre-emergent in spring and appropriate post-emergent response are the main tools needed.
Spring pre-emergent: Apply Prodiamine 65 WDG before soil temps hit 55°F. A single application provides season-long crabgrass and annual weed protection through the summer growing season.
Post-emergent: Zoysia is tolerant of a wider range of herbicides than most warm-season grasses. Spot-treat visible weeds with a selective post-emergent labeled safe for Zoysia. Always check the label — some herbicides safe for Bermuda can damage or discolor Zoysia.
Fall pre-emergent: A second application in early fall prevents winter annual weeds (henbit, chickweed, annual bluegrass) from establishing during Zoysia dormancy when the thick mat no longer suppresses them naturally.
Seasonal Care Overview
🌸 Spring
- Pre-emergent before 55°F soil
- First fertilizer when soil hits 65°F
- Soil test if not done recently
- Begin mowing as green-up starts
☀️ Summer
- Mow every 7–10 days at 1–2 inches
- Midsummer Milorganite application
- Water 1 inch per week
- Spot-treat visible weeds
🍂 Fall
- Last fertilizer 6–8 weeks before frost
- Core aerate if thatch over 0.5 inch
- Fall pre-emergent for winter weeds
- Reduce irrigation as temps drop
❄️ Winter
- No fertilizing during dormancy
- No mowing needed
- Plan spring pre-emergent timing
- Service equipment during downtime
Top Product Picks for Zoysia
Prodiamine 65 WDG (Generic Barricade) 5 lb
Professional pre-emergent that provides 5–6 months of crabgrass protection from a single spring application. Apply before soil hits 55°F. Zoysia's best long-term weed defense is density, but pre-emergent secures the spring window before that density is established.
